Although this book focuses on migrant ships to South Australia in particular its interest is much wider - many of the vessels called at other Australian ports, and the first part of the book is devoted to general aspects of migration. Introductory chapters deal with shipping of the era, how tonnage was calculated, the difference between the rigs of vessels, the voyage, the route to Australia (with a map of a typical voyage), entertainment and conditions on ships generally - preparations for the voyage, passenger accommodation, water, food, washing facilities, illness, death, childbirth, illumination, fire hazard, approaching Australia. Other chapters deal with the arrival in South Australia - the land of promise, Glenelg and Port Adelaide - both the Old Port and the New Port. The reference section includes:

  • Details of every known ship arriving in South Australia from Britain and Europe 1836-1866, ie rig, tonnage, place and year of construction, measurements, master and name of the owners, voyage details and plus other information and some photos where available.
  • Description of the type of ships A brief explanation of the different ship rigs and well executed line drawings of three of these (typical 3 mast ship, barque, brig), which may be used in family history publications (under the terms outlined).
