Rita Weiss cherished the postcards that her daughter sent while on a European
vacation, but didn't want to keep them in a shoebox that would rarely be opened.
She decided to make those evocative postcards 'a part of everyday
life' by transferring them onto fabric and showcasing the images on a beautiful
guilt.
The series of warmly personal projects that follow were created by Weiss and
fellow quilter Linda Causee as a way to celebrate loved ones and memorable
occasions. Simply use your own photos and such remembrances as love letters,
fabric from articles of clothing, or poems to make these designs your own.
There are instructions for quilting basics and information on two methods for
reproducing images on fabric: using transfer paper, and a computer printer.
You can commemorate:
- A father by turning his discarded ties into a whimsical design
- Family members with a quilt that looks like an old fashioned photo album
page
- A navy career using appliqued blocks that depict ports of call
- Competition victories featuring colourful prize ribbons
- A favourite sports team by attaching collector's pins for a foundation
pieced background
- And so much more ... just use your imagination!
Trace your life history in fabric and thread, and create a treasured heirloom
in the process.
