Newspapers are a quite different source to most of those used by family historians. Their area of circulation is dictated by commercial factors--they respect no county boundaries let alone ecclesiastical jurisdictions which define so much manuscript source material. Then, too, whereas those document were normally designed to be retained, at least for a time, and form a part of a coherent collection, newspapers are, by their nature, ephemeral. It is amazing that any have survived at all, let alone the magnificent runs in many local collections. But missing odd issues or longer gaps must be expected. It should be noted that, with early newspapers in particular, locally-held runs are often much more extensive that in the British Library.
This guide is designed to tell family historians what newspapers have been published in any specific place and where they can be consulted. No differentiation is made, therefore, between the original paper copies and microfilms of originals elsewhere. In any case originals are often now too fragile and only microfilms may be consulted.
In this new edition, all the archives, libraries and societies mentioned in the first edition were contacted to see whether their holding had changed, and have been updated as necessary, and Stuart Raymon has provided information about websites of relevance.
