Over the centuries there have been many waves of immigrants (or aliens as
described in official documentation) arriving in the UK. From medieval times
onwards Jews, Huguenots and religious minorities escaping from persecution have
made their home there.
More recently, many people from former colonies have emigrated to the shores
of the UK. In this book, the records of each group held at The National Archives
are examined in full, as well as documents relating to prisoners of war, spies,
internees and deportees. An appendix gives the location of immigrant records
held outside The National Archives, as well as many other useful addresses.
Following the success of the first edition of this title, this research guide
has been fully updated to cover:
- recent changed at the National Archives
- using online sources including citizenship records, the 1901 censuses, and
Moving Here, a major new website relating to the experience of immigrants over
the past two centuries
- key sources and legislation up to 1987
