Description

People have lived in the Hoylake and Meols area for more than 6,000 years; from the Stone Age men have left their mark and Celts, Romans, Saxons and Vikings farmed and fished here. In the Middle Ages three small hamlets were created, Hoose, Great and Little Meols. During the 18th and 19th centuries the Hoyle Lake was used as an anchorage for some of Liverpool's merchant fleet, with two lighthouses, a customs depot and a life-boat station. The railway allowed them to become modest holiday resorts and dormitories for Liverpool and Birkenhead.
