Description

Ashford has a been an important market town since the Middle Ages, its geographical position making it accessible from a wide area and a crossing place of ancient routes. In due course it became the centre of a network of turnpike roads and, finally, an important railway junction. The decision of the South Eastern Railway to establish the Company’s workshops in the town led to a change in its character from the middle of the 19th century and an increase in population.
