Harrow is one of the best known landmarks in Middlesex. The steep streets of the old town and the school buildings retain an old-world atmosphere ... very different from the Greater Harrow that most local people know. For this is a new place: of avenues of semi-detached houses, shopping parades, underground stations and busy roads, the product of the 1920s and '30s. It was the inter-war years that saw the most dramatic change as Harrow rapidly absorbed the surrounding villages. This was the day of Metroland!
