| This handbook has been produced specifically to meet the demands of the growing number of those interested in local and family history. Its aim is to provide a single volume source of information for those engaged in historical research in the county of Devon regarding all civil parishes. No work of this kind has been produced since the gazetteer in Hoskins’ 'Devon' was first published in 1954, and Helen Harris has brought an original eye to her new study, bringing the information and its style of presentation into the twenty-first century. Not content with using extant published sources, the author has driven hundreds of miles throughout the county in order to collect information, to meet local historians, and to see for herself and record the principal features of each parish. All 422 civil parishes (plus Lundy and the Authorities of Exeter, Plymouth and Torbay) are included alphabetically. Each entry is accompanied by a concise historical overview of the parish, details worthy of specific note, comparative population figures between the 1901 census and today, sources for further reading and, where they exist details of local history groups and museums. The book is illustrated by a broad range of photographs, often chosen to depict buildings or other features of note, and to provide a flavour of the parishes in times past. 'A Handbook of Devon Parishes' will be a lasting reference work for many years to come. Contents: Introduction Location Map A-Z Listing of Parishes |
