Description

The earliest prehistoric evidence for the area was discovered in Teddington in the 1930s when ox and reindeer bones were excavated and large quantities of antler tools were found. Until recently, however, there was little evidence of Roman occupation until an urn was dug up in Hampton Wick.

It is from the period of the Anglo-Saxons that the place names of Hampton and Teddington derive. But both areas were divided into manors before the Norman Conquest. Several buildings are thought to have stood on the site of Hampton Court Palace.
