London could very easily have lost Hampstead Heath to the builders. As the great city spread inexorably northwards, swallowing villages in its way, the delights of the green hills of Hampstead were obvious sites for villas and estates. It is a unique open space and London's northern heights have no finer sights than an early morning mist lifting from the hills.

It was the people of Hampstead who saved them for posterity and it was others of their kind who rallied to add the beautiful spaces of Parliament Hill, Kenwood, Golders Hill, West Heath and the Heath Extension.
