Description

Guisborough, long regarded as the ancient capital of Cleveland, was dominated for centuries by the great Augustinian Priory of St Mary which became one of the most magnificent in the north of England, but since its dissolution has been used as a quarry until little of its grandeur remains. In 1550 the Priory estate was sold to Sir Thomas Chaloner and there are many reminders of his family's contribution to the town's success. Development in more recent years has occurred as Guisborough has become a popular residential area.
