This is the first detailed study of all the older houses on the island, with about 1,000 still standing that are shown on the map of the island that was prepared in 1787 for the Duke of Richmond. The complete map is reproduced in this work, with every house that existed at that time clearly marked, numbered and related to in the text. For each house a suggested date is given, based on the sequence of styles that has emerged from comparisons of many details of construction and carving in the stone work of doorways and fireplaces.
