Forward Undeterred' describes the formation of the 23rd Battalion in early 1915, and its training at Broadmeadows and Egypt prior to landing at Gallipoli in September 1915. For the next few months the unit garrisoned the Lone Pine and Brown's Dip trenches, usually on a roster of 48 hours in each. Although the battalion was not involved in any major battles, the unit suffered casualties on an almost daily basis until evacuated in December.

After some months in the hot sands of Egypt, the 23rd Battalion sailed to France, where over the next two and a half years, it fought in most of the major battles of France and Belgium, including Pozieres, Bullecourt, Ypres, Hamel and Mont St Quentin. It was at Mont St Quentin in September 1918, the Private Robert Mactier earned to battalion's only Victoria Cross.

The extensive use of soldier's diaries and letters in this book, provides the reader with a fascinating insight into the life of an AIF battalion during the Great War of 1914-1918.
