The Rolls, as at September 1916, of the First Division of the NZ Expeditionary Force Reserve for the 21 Military Districts are alphabetical for each district. ‘The First Division of the Reserve consists of men, natural-born British subjects, not less that twenty and under forty-six years of age, who were unmarried, or who married since 1 May 1915 and had no child under sixteen by a previous marriage, or who were widowers wit no children under sixteen, or who were divorced or judicially separated from their wives and had no children under sixteen years of age.' The Military Defaulters Lists from "The New Zealand Gazette" 14 May 1919-28 Apr 1921. Six alphabetical lists contain full name, occupation and address. The disqualifications and penalties the defaulters were subject to are detailed. Some men whose names were later removed from the Defaulters List are included. More than 2000 men listed. Note: The new publication plus the NZEF Embarkation Rolls and the Second NZEF Reserve Lists comprise a virtual census of European men over the age of 21 between 1916-1917.
