Written by Mark Antony Lower and published in 1843 this book contains essays on the historical origins and meanings of surnames. Consisting of 15 chapters in nearly 300 pages, this book groups surnames into various catogies such as Local Surnames; Names Derived from Occupations and Pursuits; Names Derived from Dignitaries etc; Surnames from Natural Objects; Surnames of Contempt; surnames from Personala nd Mental Qualities and so much more.

Also in this fascinating little book as an appendix, is a list of Latinized names and the Roll of Battle Abbey. This is a list of the names of those supposed to have fought for William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. This Roll comprises the three lists compiled by Leland, Holinshed and John Foxes.
