This book contains information on the shipping movements to the South
Australian South Coast area during to working life of Port Elliot. Covers
Rosetta Cove, Victor Harbor, Port Elliot and the Murray Mouth.
The first appearance of the name Port Elliot in newspaper shipping columns
appears in June 1850 from a vessel which departed from Port Adelaide with
passengers and stores. It was in August 1851 the the harbour was gazetted as a
legal port. During the 1850s there was a steady stream of cargo for settlers and
others along the river was brought in, and wool, grain and other produce was
taken out.
By 1864 an extension of the railway line to a new jetty built at Victor
Harbor was complete, and trade transferred to this port.
The various vessels visiting Encounter Bay ports have been listed
alphabetically for each year. The entries provides details about each vessel,
and record the years in which visits were made. There has been little attempt to
record cargoes or passengers, but some are listed
