The purpose of this publication is to help researchers discover the names of the first publicans in the outer Sydney and suburban areas from 1788 to 1848, by showing them listed with reliable sources. One problem that is apparent is that the hotel licenses were portable and could be located in a different street from year to year. There were even cases of two different hotels having the same name in the same year. Some publicans appear to have been licensed at more than one pub around the same time. Very confusing!
This CD contains names of pubs and publicans (and brewers) of the earliest days of the settlement of New South Wales in the County of Cumberland, outside of the central business district of Sydney for the years 1788 to 1848. Some entries may be in fact be situated in the CBD, such as ones listed as “Parramatta Road”. The following database includes all suburbs of Sydney including Parramatta, Windsor and Hawkesbury, Appin and Campbelltown, Penrith and Narellan, ALL mentions of Parramatta Road or Street, ALL mentions of Liverpool Road (but not Street), South Head Road (even when it states Sydney).
