The first clear evidence of the establishment of a Methodist Society in
Dundee dates from 1759. John Wesley himself visited the town on several
occasions and the first Methodist Chapel in Dundee was opened in Tally Street in
1788.
Methodism has continued unbroken until the present day through success and
failure, based on various premises. Methodists such as William Doig and James
and William Scrimgeour have been prominent, not only in preaching and leading
worship, but also in the civic life of Dundee and working to improve the social
conditions of its citizens.
Parish records are a valuable historical and genealogical record, but are
often not vary accessible. This publication produced by the 'Friends of the
Dundee City Archives' makes the baptism records from Dundee available in an accessible
form. The 'Friends' have produced a transcript of the baptisms covering the
period 1785-1898. Set out in a table format, and arranged alphabetically by
surname, other details include: First Name/s, Born, Baptised, Father, Address,
Occupation, Mother.
