Dover was a town of importance as the great Roman pharos shows; it stands there still, and it was a thousand years old when the Normans came. Dover was and remains the Port of the Passage. Through two millennia it has been the great men as well as countless humbler folk, who have passed through the town on their way to and from Europe. Crusaders for the Holy Land, armies bound for European wars, all came through Dover's harbour and fleets of ships provided their Cinque Port service to the Crown, turning their hands to occasional piracy.
