Description

Dorchester has been well-used by man for more than 4,000 years. There presence has left a profusion of Neolithic, Bronze and Iron-Age monuments, including the most impressive hill-fort in Britain at Maiden Castle. After its reduction by Vespasian's legion the Romans founded the town proper on the site it still occupies, with their defences surviving. The medieval town became an important market centre which continued to grow through the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Enclosure of its open fields in 1874 permitted the growth of suburbs ... including the latest, the Prince of Wales's famous Poundbury.
