Description

Bass Strait sailors and pilots of light aircraft know them well--the lonely, lovely islands scattered across perilous seas between north-eastern Tasmania and south-eastern Victoria.

Flinders is the largest, an island of farmers, fishermen and of many other who live there because they enjoy its unique natural charm and relaxed lifestyle.

This is a little known but very special place for bushwalkers and bowlers, scuba divers, golfers, beachcombers, artists and photographers, for fishermen, field naturalists, bird observers and those who just want to get away from it all to new experiences and interest.

For visits at various times during the past fifteen years, Jean Edgecombe and her husband Gordon have hired a small Piper Cherokee aircraft from Melbourne.

When the weather forecast is right, with Gordon at the controls, and Jean checking maps and landmarks, they head off across western Gippsland to Wilsons Promontory, then set a course south east over the chain of islands to Flinders in the Furneaux Group. Interesting, exciting and very beautiful, the flight is always a challenge, the destination a delight--spring wildflowers, autumn mushrooms, magnificent mountains, dramatic coasts--and the greetings: 'Hello, you two here again!'
