Photography was and is a staggering invention. It brought our ancestors
face to face with themselves, and it brings us face to face with them.
Not surprisingly, therefore, photographs form an important and
treasured part of many a family archive. Whether they come in a full
set of albums of survive as a battered handful of pictures, they
provide a window through which we can gain a glimpse of our own past.
Despite
having been easy to take, however, 20th century photographs are not
always easy to date - although if taken outside, the surroundings can
sometimes help to date it. Other than that you tend to rely on the
clothing worn by those in the photograph, as well as a number of other
factors.
This book goes into this in detail, and is a companion volume to 'Dating Nineteenth Century Photographs'.
