Photography was and is a staggering invention. It brought our ancestors
face to face with themselves, and it brings us face to face with them.
Not surprisingly, therefore, photographs form an important and
treasured part of many a family archive. Whether they come in a full
set of albums of survive as a battered handful of pictures, they
provide a window through which we can gain a glimpse of our own past.
The
intention of this book is to help with the understanding and
identification of Victorian (nineteenth century) photographs. The
original book, 'Dating Old Photographs' which is now out of print,
dealt with the period up to the First World War, but so much more needs
to be said about the twentieth century than was originally attempted.
The resulting major revision and expansion has led to the work being
published in two volumes, this, the first covering the nineteenth
century.
This volume covers both the Georgian and Victorian
eras - the Edwardian era will appear in the second volume, which will
cover the twentieth century.
