Description

A royal house in a royal park, the house has had a succession of notable residents since Charles II. Cumberland Lodge is a royal house-yet it was built by one of Oliver Cromwell's republican Ironsides. After the Restoration it was taken over by Charles II and became the residence of the Ranger of Windsor Great Park. The Lodge and the gardens were shaped to their requirements and architectural tastes and the Duke of Marlborough's wife Sarah Churchill was among them. The formal gardens were created in the Dutch style by the first Earl of Portland, `Butcher' Cumberland. It later became the home of Queen Victoria's daughter, Helena, and her husband, Prince Christian.
