On 25 July 1745 Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the 'Young Pretender', landed with a handful of supporters on the west coast of Scotland. This marked the beginning of the '45 Rebellion; the last and greatest of the Jacobite adventures.
He gathered around him an army of loyal Highland clansmen and defeated the government forces sent against him at Prestonpans. Following an abortive invasion of England, however, the Prince's army fought its last apocalyptic battle on a windswept Drunmossie Moor against an English army under the Duke of Cumberland - the 'Butcher'.
