Crowborough has changed more since the invention of the camera than it had in six centuries before that time. The change is not confined to the appearance and size of the town, but has affected the way people live and work. Early 19th-century farm-workers had more in common with their medieval predecessors than with their modern counterparts. Crowborough was particularly fortunate to have Ambrose Henry Stickells, an excellent Victorian photographer who took his camera out and about and whose prolific output of pictures has mostly survived intact.
