Residents and visitors to Nottinghamshire will have a clearer sense of direction – thanks to this easy to read, and up to date atlas.
The full-colour atlas of Nottinghamshire is the result of months of planning and production between the national mapping agency and co-publishers, Philip’s. It differs from many other atlases, not only in the style of the mapping but also because it includes rural districts surrounding major towns and cities as well as all the built-up areas.
As a result, it claims to be the most comprehensive atlas of the county in the shops and pinpoints a staggering 17,000 streets, roads and major public buildings.
The atlas covers all of Nottinghamshire, as well as parts of adjoining counties. It includes places such as Kirkby in Ashfield, Mansfield, Newark-on-Trent, Nottingham, West Bridgford and Worksop – as well as showing parts of neighbouring Lincolnshire and Long Eaton in Derbyshire. An extra-large scale map of Nottingham town centre is also included – along with town maps of nearby Chesterfield and Lincoln.
Identical streets are plentiful in Nottinghamshire. The three most common names in the atlas are: Main Street – with 86 entries listed, followed by 64 for Church Lane. High Street and Station Road are joint third – both are mentioned 49 times in the atlas.
'In every county, many streets carry identical names, so the importance of having a comprehensive atlas with rural areas is obvious', says Ordnance Survey’s Publishing Manager, Karen McGrath.
The atlas is the one in the series of Street Atlases from Ordnance Survey, now covering more than many counties from central Scotland to the South Coast of England. They all carry a range of easy-to-spot symbols highlighting facilities such as parks, post offices, railway stations, police, fire and ambulance stations, hospitals, schools and colleges, and major public buildings.
