Cornwall's beautiful coast. Since the Royal Albert bridge at Saltash was opened in 1859 and Cornwall was linked by rail to the rest of England, visitors have flooded into the county, providing a timely economic alternative to the declining mining and fishing industries.
Some 300 miles of Cornish coastline extend from the banks of the River Tamar in the south east, around Land's End, to Bude in the north. There are few places along this coast that cannot claim some association with the county's maritime heritage, be it the cliff path site of a coastwatcher's lonely hut, or the harsh industrial environment of a modern ship repair dock.
Cornwall's maritime heritage may be witnessed today in a multitude of coastal village, quays, jetties, harbours, docks and beaches, each of which have variously supported Cornwall's chief industries: fishing, mining, quarrying, agriculture, general trading and smuggling. The object of this book is to outline Cornwall's maritime heritage and offer a guide to places of interest in the county today.
