Colchester was important in Roman times and is thought to have been Arthur's Camelot. Though now a prosperous and expanding community, it has managed to retain much of its historic character. Roman remains abound, there are Saxon traces and many medieval structures, though a great deal of modern Colchester is Victorian and Edwardian. This book concentrates on the 19th century and up to 1950, when the physical fabric still remained largely Victorian. Bygone Colcestrians are seen in their world of elegant houses, tramcars and carriages.
