The author's previous publication 'Scottish Clock and Watch Makers',
published in 1996, provided a useful checklist of Scottish makers, giving their
names, dates (as far as found), and as far as possible, what they actually did
apart from clock and watch making.
To provide a comprehensive work covering all of Scotland would require a
large volume. It seems that treatment by individual towns and/or districts is
more feasible. This volume covers Edinburgh and the Lothians only, and gives the
genealogical and historical researcher valuable information towards their
research. Further works on this subject covering other areas in Scotland are
planned by the author.
