From the 16th century Chiswick was a popular retreat for wealthy Londoners. Famous people who made their homes there include painters, William Hogarth and Johann Zoffany, and writers, Alexander Pope and W.B. Yeats. Chiswick was also the scene of a decisive skirmish in the English Civil War, the place where the Royal Horticultural Society planted it experimental gardens and where Bedford Park, asknowledged as the prototype garden suburb, was built.
Well known products such as linoleum and Cherry Blossom boot polish were invented in Chiswick and large firms such as shipbuilder Thornycroft & Co., wallpaper manufacturer Sandersons, and Fullers Brewery all began their operations in Chiswick.
This new book, arranged alphabetically for easy reference charts Chiswick's history and development right up to the present day, and provides detailed information on Chiswick's buildings, inhabitants, industries, amenities, transport facilities, streets and road. It contains much new information and many illustrations which have never been published before.
