Chichester is fortunate: the mass of evidence accumulated from its excavations has added greatly to our knowledge of the town's origin, layout, defences and economy; and the lifestyle of its citizens. Chichester's story is traced from its roots in the late Iron Age when the dynastic squabbles of the kings in south-east Britain culminated in the flight of the local king to Rome to seek help. The subsequent invasion put the local Atrebates on the winning side and the site of Chichester became the civitas capital of the Regni.
