Description

Captain William Herbert Sidney Jones was born in England in 1889. He went to sea as an apprentice in 1906 at the age of 15, on the full-rigged ship 'British Isles' where he served for almost 4 years. After leaving the 'British Isles' in May 1909 at the completion of his apprenticeship, Captain Jones served on the three masted Barque Caithness-Shire, and subsequently moved on to other vessels.

'The Cape Horn Breed' is a gripping account of William Jones's life as a 15 year old apprentice on the ship 'British Isles'. he kept a pencilled diary in which recorded these voyages. From the thrilling exhilaration of 'bowling across from 8 at 10 knots before the North East Trade', to the terror and numbing cold of 71 days rounding Cape Horn from the east to west in winter. A nightmare voyage in which four men died but the 'British Isles' survived. This is no romantic sentimental picture, but a story of endurance, skill and great courage.
