Canberra owes its unique design to events that occurred between 1911-1913, when the federal government opened a competition to design the national capital. This book reveals how the competition became an international battleground of planning styles, and of struggles between architects, engineers, landscape architects and land surveyors. The centrepiece of the book is a portfolio of competition designs which reproduces 46 surviving design entries with biographical information about the entrants, and responses to the designs.
