Down the years, Buckinghamshire has had its fair share of heroes - some of them well known inside and outside the county, others with a more valued local reputation.
Among those featured here are Florence Nightingale and her 'silent work' in north Buckinghamshire, with the remarkable Medical Officer for Health there, Dr De-Ath; Roald Dahl, the world famous children's author; Sir John Mills, the quintessential film hero; John Hampden, MP for Wendover, and a true fighter for democracy against the unscrupulous King Charles; and one of the country's favourite actors, Georffrey Palmer, OBE.
Many other stories pay homage to the unsung heroes whose lives were an inspiration to all who knew them. People like Dame Frances Dover, founder of Wycombe Abbey School; the secret Second World War heroes of Station X at Bletchley Park; Ken 'Snakehips' Johnson, the very first man to create an all West Indian Dance Orchestra; Thomas Ball, who battled against a rare childhood cancer; and John Newton, composer of the beautiful hymn 'Amazing Grace'.
They come from every walk of life and from different ages, but there is one thing they all have in common - they are true Buckinghamshire heroes, with stories of determination and courage.
