Bournemouth began on the afternoon of 14 July 1810, when Mrs Tregonwell suggested to her husband that he should build a holiday residence near the beach. He had taken her there to show her the beautiful but desolate area that, as Captain of the Yeomanry, he had watched for Napoleon's threatened invasion but also to help the local customs men suppress the rampant smuggling for which the area was ideal—and famous.
