Robert Hugill had a lifetime interest in medieval and early modern Scotland and in the fortifications built in the Border lands between England and Scotland, when the "Steel Bonnets" were most active.

Here, he arranged the castles and peles in alphabetical order, with an account of their history, architectural features, associations and legends, and concluded with a bibliography, a glossary of architectural, military, and other terms in general use, and an index to the whole.

Published in 1939, the full title of the book is "Borderland Castles and Peles: A Concise Guide to the Strongholds of the Anglo-Scottish Border, Compiled for the Use of Motorists, Cyclists, Walkers, and Others Interested in These Picturesque Survivals of Medieval Times"

This work is of particular interest to many of the families from this region seeking information on the numerous family castles, peles, and other fortifications in the Border lands.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
