Description

Bocking Deanery (now the Old Deanery) is one of the most interesting smaller houses in Essex. Built on the ‘one hide’ of land left to the church at the end of the 10th century by the pious Christian, Aetheric of Bocking,  until very recently it has been the residence of a long line of rectors and deans. Among them were the notorious high-living Dr. John Gauden of Eikon Basilike fame, the priggish Dr. Wordsworth (brother of the poet), the aristocratic Lord and Lady Charles Murray-Aynsley. The book explains the various stages of its building and embellishment and sketches in the history of the parish from its Viking settlement.
