Very rare ... this large book is a detailed history and account of the progress and culture of the well known gold mining area of Ballarat up to (and including) 1901. Fully titled 'Ballarat and District in 1901, a concise history of its rise, progress and present prosperity in its mining, engineering, agriculture, art, trade and manufactures', this book mainly focuses on the history of the industries in the area. However it also contains information about education, public institutions, churches, sport, and government within the region.
A large portion of the book consists of over 400 illustrations of buildings, people, monuments, gardens, mining illustrations, as well as natural features from the local area, which provide an insight into Ballarat as it was.
This book is useful for those interested in the history of Ballarat or the gold and mining industry in Australia.
