The material used to prepare this book has basically been taken from the Register of British Ships for the port of Sydney, but it would be as well to consider the remarks in the Foreword of Book Five. Further the bacis material has, in some instances, been extended or amplified with material from contemporary newspapers.
An important consideration must be the fact that many people enrolled their ships in Sydney at this time, for a variety of reasons, when they were not actually resident in Sydney of nearby districts. Therefore shipowners listed in this book may be residents of New Zealand, Van Diemen's Land, Melbourne, Moreton Bay, or elsewhere.
This information, when known, is states, but the facts that the vessel was enrolled in Sydney does not automatically mean, in this period, that the owner was a resident of the city.
