Description

Less than 150 years ago 'Aldershott' as the town was known, was a small, sleepy, rural village. The catalyst that transformed it into the town of Aldershot was the decision, in the winter of 1853-4, to establish a permanent military camp on the deserted heathland north of the village. The raw, rustic place became a genteel location with theatres, churches, newspapers and leafy residential areas; not only were royal visits frequent, but Queen Victoria even had her own residence there. The joint authors have produced a lucid and entertaining narrative covering every phase of the town's story.
