One thing that you will learn when beginning family history research is that
there are no standards for abbreviations (except for a few exceptions). Each
resource seems to have its own system. This lack of uniformity prompted the
author to start recording these references, and in 1995 'Abbreviations for
Genealogists' was released.
Afterall how many people know the following: cit = citizen (usually of
London); fs = female servant / free by servitude; GRG = Government Record
Groups South Australia; im = inmate; l s = lodger's son / lawful son; osp =
obiit sine prole (died without issue) ... and so on.
Now after several editions, and reprints this work is still an immensely
useful reference work for any Australian researching their family history ...
not just those beginning their search.
